Chapter 7
The influence of Technology
“Life is about feelings
rather than showings.”
Amadeus Lombardi
Throughout this book, we talked a lot about the influence technology has on us, and especially on the younger generations out there. Of course, technology is not bad, and we all can be delighted that it is in our life. We all know, that technology is helping us a lot in our day to day life, and how we can take benefit of it. However, in this chapter, I will also explain how technology and especially social media is changing our lives negatively.
The quote is showing the first and essential aspect of social media. As you know and probably already heard several times, social media is excellent for swallowing feelings.
Yes, most of us only post positive things about our lives. Every social media account is looking very positive, and only the good things are showing, which is a human instinct. We want people to think how great our life is, how we do not have any problems, and how often we go traveling, what we can buy and what we can afford.
Often life looks different; often we have negative feelings, maybe not everything in our life is as high as it seems like on our online accounts. Often, we hide the negativity and feel like a better person if we can post only positive things. Usually, we try to impress people, who do not even care, but it lets us feel better in our skin, which is again connectable to our self-love. As most people are not any celebrities, who get a lot of attention from outside, we at least try to get positive feedback online. We are happy when somebody is complimenting us, even if it might be fake. It lets us feel better. However, let’s dig deeper into what is influencing this behaviour.
Fact is, we love having attention; that’s why it is so important to give much attention to babies and small children. A baby could die by not receiving enough attention and skin contact, which is scientifically proven. As we grow up, of course, we might not get as much attention as we got when we were younger. We are not anymore, the small ‘cutie pie’, but rather the grownup, who is not allowed to show any feelings in public, that’s at least what we think. We are not the small kid anymore, which always gets attention when it starts crying, but we should instead stop crying in public, as it might be embarrassing, which is a human way of thinking; the way most of us got taught and a social standard, which gets outlived on this world. However, even when we grow up, we have feelings which we might want to share with the world. It is an ability we need to learn in the process of growing up, to get stronger, to not necessarily show our emotions whenever we feel like, to not start crying whenever we want something, or did you ever see a 17-year-old boy crying when he didn’t get a new phone? I didn’t.
